What does it mean to live a luminous life? This question has been tossing around my mind for many years. Being luminous is a state of being, a way of life, philosophy, health care routine, presentation powerhouse, parenting energizer, and teacher motivator. It also can put us on the fast track to healing.

When the days get shorter, it is more important than ever to be in touch with our inner light. Think about the things you love to do and make sure to schedule time to make it happen. If you are short on time and money (and who isn't these days?), make a plan and put a date on the calendar.  Having something luminous to look forward to can be a game changer.

WRITING YOGA® PROMPT #2017: What is one simple thing you will do today to feel luminous?

Choose an activity from the diagram (breathe, dance, be kind etc). Go do it! Write about how you felt before you started and how you felt afterwards. What shifted? Write in your journal for at least 5 minutes.

12 Ways to Get Luminous with the Writing Yoga® Method

1. Breathe

Take a moment to pause and focus on your breath. Deep, intentional breathing can ground you and bring clarity to your mind. Try inhaling for four counts, holding for four, and exhaling for four. Repeat until you feel your inner light glow stronger.

2. Listen

Stop and really listen to the world around you, to a favorite song, or to a loved one. Active listening can deepen connections and open your heart, making space for light to enter.

3. Take Time to Wonder

Let curiosity lead the way. Whether it’s gazing at the stars, pondering a deep question, or marveling at the intricacy of a flower, wonder helps us tap into a sense of awe and inspiration.

4. Close Your Eyes

Closing your eyes, even for a moment, can help block out distractions and bring you back to yourself. Use this time to visualize something that makes you feel joyful or calm.

5. Walk

A simple walk can do wonders for your mood and energy. Whether it’s a quick stroll around the block or a hike in nature, walking clears the mind and lets your thoughts flow freely.

6. Go with the Flow

Let go of rigid plans and allow yourself to be in the moment. Trust where life takes you. Sometimes, the most luminous moments come from unexpected detours.

7. Write for 5 Minutes

Put pen to paper and let your thoughts spill out. It doesn’t have to be perfect or profound. Writing clears mental clutter and makes room for creativity and insight.

8. Stretch

Stretching isn’t just for the body; it’s for the soul too. Reach your arms to the sky, bend down to touch your toes, or do a gentle twist. Feel the energy flow through you as you open up space for light.

9. Dance

Turn up your favorite song and let your body move however it wants. Dance like no one is watching and feel the joy and freedom it brings.

10. Be Kind

Acts of kindness—big or small—can create ripples of light in the world. Smile at a stranger, hold the door, or send a kind message. The warmth of kindness illuminates from the inside out.

11. Share and Let Go

Share your thoughts, ideas, or time with someone. And then, let go of any expectations. Letting go can feel like a weight lifting, leaving more space for your light to shine.

12. Trust Your Truth

Listen to your intuition and trust what feels right for you. When you’re aligned with your truth, your light shines naturally and effortlessly.

Living a luminous life isn’t about being perfect or having everything figured out. It’s about finding those little moments that make you feel alive, connected, and full of joy. It’s the deep breath when things feel overwhelming, the dance party in your kitchen, or that quiet walk that clears your mind. These simple acts remind us that even on the hardest days, we have a light inside that can guide us.

And here’s the thing: you don’t have to wait for the perfect time or the perfect plan to start. Just pick one small thing that feels good and let it brighten your day. The more you lean into these moments, the more you’ll find yourself naturally weaving light into your life. So go ahead—breathe, move, write, wonder. Let your inner light shine in a way that feels natural and true to you.
