Taking Time to Plant the Seeds for Creativity

Taking Time to Grow a Dream with Some Magic Seeds at Your Library

I live in a world of magic gardens, storytelling and imaginative innovation. We call this place a library. Even serious research is done through this lens. If you love your library as I do, this makes perfect sense. Many months ago, I booked Cornell Cooperative Extension to read, speak and plant seeds with my students for agricultural literacy week. My library became a greenhouse.

I didn't plan the visit to be on a day when we engaged with the word "plant" in my Writing Yoga® course. What a coincidence! It's also St Patrick's Day so I can just blame the leprechauns, right?

In any case, I enjoy when the work I do with library students coincides with my writing life.

So, what will you plant in your life this week? Many local libraries have free seed exchanges! It can be fun to literally plant a seed as a symbol of something you are just starting to create. Set a goal with your imagination as your guide. It's never to late to dream up something big.

Gather Your Seeds and Plant a Spring Intention. Here's How:

Before you begin any project, you must imagine it first. Once you have a clear idea of what you would like to create, you are ready to sow. Try this Writing Yoga® practice:

  • Sit: Find a quiet moment. Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Ask yourself: What seeds will I plant for my project?  Notice what feelings arise. Enjoy this calm state of relaxation and possibility.
  • Write: Set a timer for 5-10 minutes. List all of the actions you will take to make your project a reality. Start with what you imagine, and watch the seeds settle into your paper and pen.
  • Move: Do seated arm exercises. Plant your feet in the ground and imagine they are roots. Raise your arms overhead. Lean to one side. Lean to the other side. Notice how your torso is strong in this seated pose. Plant your feet and let your arms wave like leaves. Add chair pose, a seated cat/cow or any other movement to your flow. Try this "seated arm exercise" anytime your arms need a break from the computer. It's easy and gentle on the body so you won't get tired of this pose throughout the week.
