The Secret Ingredient to Growth: Mixing New Ideas Into Your Projects and Life
Mar 31, 2025There comes a point in every creative project and every creative life where whatever worked in the past isn't working anymore.
Have you ever felt stuck in a routine that no longer excites you? Or maybe you’re craving a spark, something new, something fresh that shakes things up and pushes you to grow?
It’s Time to Mix it Up!
When we mix things up, we challenge ourselves, break free from the monotony, and allow new possibilities to emerge. We toss in new ideas, shift our focus, and add unexpected ingredients to create a life that feels fuller, more vibrant, and full of potential.
Mixing is the art of experimentation and being willing to test new ideas and directions. Mixing represents growth, transformation, and expansion. It's about adding some spice, something that wakes up your senses and calls you to move beyond your comfort zone.
When you mix, you give yourself permission to:
- Change directions to test new paths, ideas, and challenge yourself to grow.
- Add new elements and breathe life into old habits.
- Stir things up to move beyond the familiar and shake the weeds and dust loose.
Instead of staying in your comfort zone, mixing invites you to stretch, to try something new, and to be bold. It’s a challenge, yes, but it’s also an opportunity to make life more interesting, purposeful, and dynamic.
Turning Mix Into Action
Now that you’re ready to mix things up, here’s how to bring this concept into your life with a Writing Yoga® practice. Usually we "Sit, Write and Move" here but in the spirit of mixing it up, let's "Move, Sit, Write" this week!
Move
I have taken in a family member's dog for the past month. Instead of calm mornings on the mat, it's brisk walks in the cold with an adorable, but strong dog. Needless to say, I'm mixing up my routine. Sometimes mixing happens by itself.
I initially struggled and felt out of control. You mean you need to go out before I have my coffee? But now I have adjusted my schedule to make room for the morning walk. It has given my significant other and me time together that we didn't have because he joins me on these daily strolls before work. I actually made the walks longer!
Movement is where transformation happens. No matter how you do it, taking a dog on a walk, practicing yoga, or doing jumping jacks, mix up your routine this week and see what transformation can occur.
Let the movement remind you that mixing happens in both your body and mind. How can you exercise differently today?
Sit
Find a moment to settle in, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. Let your body relax into the present moment.
Notice what thoughts arise without judgement. Breathe. Watch your thoughts travel away to the horizon. Breathe into the place where earth meets the sky. Let the thoughts escape there. Don't worry about answers and insights. You will have time to think and write later. For now, mix up your mind with a dose of clarity.
Write
Set a timer for 5-10 minutes. Write freely about where you feel you could shake things up. If the garden metaphor we have been talking about on this blog helps, where can you cross-pollinate? Maybe you can try something new in your work routine, your creative process, or how you approach self-care.
Ask yourself:
- What new direction can I try in my personal or professional life?
- How can I add more spice to my creativity or relationships?
- What’s one small change I can make today to stir things up?
Don’t overthink it. Just write from your heart and allow the ideas to flow.
Next week, we'll "Illuminate" your journey with something new.
