3 Ways Writing Yoga® and Water Can Help You Move Through Your Day With Ease
Oct 20, 2024How do you get through the day? With effort or with ease? Of course, it takes effort to complete all the difficult tasks and challenges that you have each and every day, but it doesn't have to feel that way. It doesn't have to feel overwhelming, stressful, chaotic, like you're just playing catch up all day long. You can move through your day mindfully, and I have a method that works.
I'd love to share it with you. I just had a session last night with a group of smart, creative women, and I felt so energized after meeting with them because they wrote things that were so heartfelt. And I know from experience after a Writing Yoga® session, people will feel these lasting effects all week long. It's a way of being in the world.
Here are three tools you can use to bring ease to stressful days:
Easy Sit: Five Minute Calming Break from the Writing Yoga® Method
It's so hard to stop when the world is storming around us, but when we sit quietly, we can reconnect with the present moment and hear ourselves think. Schedule in 5 minutes to close your eyes and pause. This may seem impossible and counter-intuitive even, but think of it as a reset button! By simply sitting and noticing the sensations and feelings in your body without judgment, you calm the nervous system. For this month's session, we visualized sitting by a calm, quiet pond.
When you open your eyes and get ready to take on the challenges of the day, remind yourself that ease is always there for you to count upon. All you have to do is remind yourself to jump back and call upon your easeful state. Trust that your body will remember and bring you there.
Slow Write: Water Prompt from the Writing Yoga® Method
Have you ever watched a very still body of water like a pond or lake that has little wind? On calm days, the wildness of storms are hard to imagine. Water always inspires me to write and the metaphors for life there are fluid and limitless. What patterns, emotions, and insights arise from a mind that is as quiet as still water?
In your journal, write about sitting beside a calm body of water. Describe it using all of your senses. What did you notice? How did it feel? Did anything strange, surprise or interesting pop up from the stillness? Write it all down!
Water Move: Writing Yoga® Method
When you are done sitting by still water and writing about the still water, now you are ready to move! When we move with intention, whether it’s a gentle stretch, a walk outside, or flowing through a yoga class, we reconnect with our body and breath. Why does this matter? It is very hard to do anything with ease if our body is achy, tired, or tense. Even worse, so many of us are disconnected from feeling our bodies because we live in our heads all day long. It's time to break loose and SWiM!
This week, dance as if you are swimming through calm water. Hold the images that came to mind when you sat and wrote. Don't think about how you look. Don't overthink at all! Just put on a good tune (something with water lyrics might help) and dance.
